American Southwest: Monument Valley

//

I’m willing to bet that nearly every American could recall a movie or advertising image they’ve seen from Monument Valley. However, nothing quite beats driving around that bend on US-163 and seeing it in real life. It’s funny how well-known places tend to be different in person; sometimes for the worse, but in this case, for the better. There’s far more to it than those three iconic mounds.

Truthfully, I knew almost nothing about the area. For instance, I didn’t even realize Monument Valley is in both Arizona and Utah! (This can be a bit confusing with regard to time zones.) Nor did I know those recognizable buttes above are called “The Mittens.” And like most areas in the Southwest, a Navajo tour guide is pretty much a necessity in order to see anything off the beaten path.

Good thing I discovered Navajo Spirit Tours on TripAdvisor! I booked with them hoping they’d teach us all we needed to know. I’ve never been a big fan of guided tours, but they had so many amazing reviews, they won me over. The tours involve a 2-3 hour (or more) off-roading adventure with a Native American in an open air vehicle into the back country. The guides are locals that have been intrinsically connected to the area for generations. They explain the history of their people and culture, as well as the names and meanings behind the different rock formations.

As much as I would’ve liked to spend the day trekking around the valley, we needed an option that would accommodate our 2 children and baby. Luckily, Navajo Spirit Tours were more than willing to accommodate. We met up with our guide, “Will Cowboy,” in the lobby of our hotel and off we went riding into the red dust like John Wayne, or more likely like Clark Griswold and Beverly D’Angelo in National Lampoon’s Vacation, but in a 1980’s Suburban instead of a station wagon.

It was a wild and bumpy ride. The children happily bounced around the back seat. The baby fell asleep in my husband’s arms (!!) 30 seconds into the drive. Will Cowboy didn’t mind stopping whenever I wanted a photo. In fact, he encouraged it! We chased the sun until the full moon arose in the sky. It was my kind of adventure…

It’s no wonder why Monument Valley is seared into our memory. It has starred in countless films, television shows, commercials, video games, and music videos. But none of those can compare to absorbing its expansive beauty in person. It is wild and yet austere. And although the different mesas, buttes and rock formations are all truly impressive, the underlying history of its people stands out the most. One can’t help but feel the ancestors in the land and the movie stars in the dust.

Modern Mixtape Vol. 16: Slip Away With Me

/

180360ModMix16Happy Friday, my friends! This has been a hell of a week. I’m ready for the weekend and hopefully a handful of cocktails, a dinner party, a photo shoot, and going to the theatre to see my best friend in her latest play. How about a soundtrack to go with that and to help drown out this past week?!

I’ve been compiling this mix pretty much since the last one 6 months ago, and frankly that was too long ago. Some of these songs are a little older than I’d like, as I prefer to share new releases. In an effort to keep it current, I removed several but had to keep one that I loved too much.

There are a few surprises on here… namely Coldplay! Normally they’re too mainstream for my taste, but this song is good. I’m also really loving Wolf Alice and Angel Olsen. What can I say? I’m a sucker for strong female vocals. TV On the Radio’s Happy Idiot is a super catchy and solid track; it makes me want to dance every time I hear it. And lastly, there’s the one I had to keep in, Misses, by Girls in Hawaiiwhich reminds me of Elliott Smith. [icon size=”small” style=”none” icon=”heart” ]

It’s not every day that you stumble upon a video of your hometown, especially when you grew up somewhere as obscure as Fairbanks, Alaska. For anyone who has never been but wondered what it’s like, here’s a nice and shiny version — HA! But honestly, I’ve been feeling a bit homesick lately, so this was a nice surprise and made me feel a bit better. I come from a long line of Alaskan pioneers and I feel their spirit in my blood! One day, I will share more photos and stories of growing up there…

Hello again! Are you surprised to see 3 posts in 2 weeks? Me too! In a desperate attempt to come out of the woodwork, I’m going to start posting all of my non-published work over the past few years. It’s truly depressing (+ overwhelming) that I’ve managed to get so far behind. But nevertheless, I’m determined to make up for lost time. Sometimes you just have to start somewhere, so let’s roll back to fall of 2013, when I photographed my dear friends, the Killian family, out at the El Dorado Dry Lake Bed in Boulder City.

Scout: Bud + Vine

/

First up on SCOUT is Bud + Vine. Located in the recently renovated John E. Carson Hotel, this store offers a wonderful selection of apothecary items, plants, paper goods, as well as a full floral shop. I can’t tell you how long I’ve waited for a store like this! Without a doubt, they had me at the Soñadora wall hangings (which I’ve been lusting after for months), but I was equally thrilled to see products from Herbivore Botanicals, Culinarium Concrete and Kinfolk.

I realize many cities have handfuls of carefully curated boutiques like this, but Las Vegas does not. On my last visit, I spoke briefly with co-owner, Christina Cicatello, to congratulate her on such a lovely and much needed addition to the community. She told me they also offer after-hours floral design workshops and classes, which I’m hoping to attend soon.

Introducing: Scout

180360_ScoutSay what you will about Las Vegas, but no one reinvents themselves more than this city. Not even Madonna! The latest and most exciting changes have been taking place Downtown, specifically East Fremont.

For years, I’ve used this part of my city as an urban location for photo shoots. It was a fantastic wasteland of gritty buildings that magically changed their façade every few months. However, over the past two years, thanks to Oscar Goodman, Tony Hsieh and the Downtown Project, a major revitalization has been underway. Once boarded up buildings are now hip restaurants, shops and bars. The transformation is truly shocking.

I’ve been a little slow to check everything out (see: post-third child) and having to make up for lost time, but honestly, I think it’s hard for anyone to keep up with all of the changes in Las Vegas. That’s why I’m starting this new series called SCOUT. Here, I will post about my favorite places (old + new) in this ever-changing city. Stay tuned…
